There are moments in every day where virtually everyone feels unsatisfied with their health for some reason. Now here’s some good news: there are some simple steps you can take right now to begin feeling better about your wellbeing.
This is what you can do to start taking charge of your health.
#1. Replace one serving of a meat product with a fruit or vegetable. Fruits and vegetables are filled with fiber, natural sugars, and have high levels of water content. Even when compared to lean meat choices like chicken or turkey, they provide sustained energy while providing your digestive tract with what it needs for consistency.
#2. Don’t skip breakfast. Give yourself an energy boost at the beginning of the day so you’re less tempted to eat high-calorie foods later in the day. Choose complex whole grains, such as bran or oatmeal, to stop blood sugar spikes from occurring.
#3. Focus on adding a little exercise. You don’t need to pay for a gym membership or meet a goal of 10,000 steps to give your body some of the extra exercise it may need. Going up and down your stairs at home a few extra times per day can give you toning and improve your energy over time.
#4. Take some time to breathe. Meditation is highly recommended for better health, but even something as simple as giving yourself a 5-minute break where you can take space and not worry about anything will help to limit the stress you may be feeling. If you find yourself worrying about things a lot, consider implementing a “worry time” during the day where you give yourself 10-20 minutes to think about what worries you. Then focus on other thoughts outside of that time.
#5. Look for the good in things. There are perfect moments happening around you right now. If you focus on finding the good in things, you’ll see these moments. If your focus is on negative thoughts and feelings, then that is what you will find instead. Happiness is a choice. It isn’t always an easy choice to make in every situation, but if you try to choose it more often and your health has the chance to improve over time.
#6. Eliminate the calorie bombs. If you’re drinking sugar-sweetened drinks, then you could be adding between 100-400 calories per beverage. Just eliminating one can of soda from your daily routine can be enough for some people to lose up to 10 pounds over the course of a year.
#7. Drink more water. Up to 75% of people in the developed world are dehydrated every day, with some experiencing severe symptoms of dehydration, and they do it by choice. The symptoms of dehydration include irritability, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia. Try to add at least one 16-ounce glass of water to your daily routine every day. If you drink caffeinated products every day, consider adding a second glass of water of that size to assist with your health.
#8. Find a place of gratefulness. Although the world can come at you and force bad days your way from time to time, there is still a place of gratefulness that can be found. Acknowledge the benefits of having a loving family, caring friends, or a job that helps you to pay your bills. There is likely a roof over your head. Food in your home to eat. Clothes that you like to wear. These things may be small and feel like they are common, but they still provide reasons to be grateful too.
